We were going to visit the Buried Village of Te Wairoa but when checking this morning it is closed on Mondays so that did not happen. Other possible activities such as a tree top walk would take too long so we ended up just slowly making our way Taumarunui where our five-day canoe trip starts tomorrow. Ironically the "Whanganui River Journey" as the canoe trip is called is one of the "Great Walks" in New Zealand. We were at our destination just after 4 pm, checked in and picked a spot on the grass where we were able to pitch our tent for free. We then spent a considerable amount of time mostly packing our five allotted barrels that are coming in the canoe with us. As we will be tenting the first two nights, all of our camping gear needs to come. We will report on our canoe trip on or after January 21. Our laptop is not coming and we have been told there is no cell phone reception along the stretch of the river we are canoeing.
