The weather forecast had said increasing chance of rain throughout the morning, but somehow we had no rain whatsoever on our walk back from Heaphy hut to Kohaihai. We arrived back at our car close to 2pm and started driving east, in search of better weather as the forecast was not good for the west coast. We had planned to stay in Reefton but the campground office was closed when we got there and the backpackers we figured we'd give a shot (as it had decent reviews a few years back) turned out to be some smelly old house with minimal facilities. We ended up way further than we had planned, in a mountain spa village named Hanmer Springs where there was a nice Top Ten campground. The office was closed but there was a note saying to just pitch your tent if your arrived late, which is what we did.
