Kaikoura

We met at the kayak place at 8:15am.  Once everybody was there we hopped on a small bus - and some drove their own car - to nearby South Point where we were given instructions about the kayaking before we were allowed into the water.  It was a guided kayak tour in double sea kayaks and there were five kayaks with one guide which was very reasonable.  It was our first time sea kayaking and it was very nice to be on the water that way.  The weather was good and the ocean was very calm which apparently is quite rare.  We saw the promised fur seals from up close - both floating around in the ocean and on the rocks-, a rare blue penguin and a number of different birds.  We had kind of hoped for dolphins as well but did not see any.   We were on the water close to two hours which was fine.

After the kayaking we visited the local museum which has an exhibit about the earthquake which was interesting.   We then drove to Point Kean where there is a seal colony, went for a walk and indeed saw more seals - and lots of seagulls.   By the time we had lunch at the campground after that it was mid-afternoon.  The rest of the day was essentially spent working on the blog and photos.  Only nine days left of our trip!
